Karen Curriculum Development Programme

Karen Curriculum Development Programme

The Karen refugee education authorities working with the Dutch NGO, ZOA, are currently involved in an overhaul of the Karen curriculum in all subjects. In late 2009 the Karen education authorities requested support for the development of their English programme in the refugee camps.

BEP was happy to supply one specialist teacher to work on textbook design and development. This is a substantial programme involving the redesign of the whole of the Karen English curriculum, now divided into four key stages roughly equivalent to those in place in the UK. It is a far-reaching programme as the new curriculum will be introduced in all Karen schools.

This project is a significant undertaking in co-operation with ZOA and the KRCEE [Karen Refugee Committee Education Entity].

Currently BEP is providing specialist input into the development of KS 1 English.

Update

October 2011

A member of our team along with a member of the KRCEE is continuing with the development of Level 4. The BEP volunteers are in one of the camps supporting 33 teachers from 25 schools. At the moment they are concentrating on the delivery of Level 1.

The camp is divided into 3 zones. Each of the 3 teachers works in one of the zones. On Fridays they work with their team of teachers, training them in using the materials and dmonstrating a range of techniques. During the week they support their teachers in the classroom, not taking the class but observing the teacher teaching, giving help and advice and modelling aspects of the lesson. As and when they can, they talk with the teacher offering feedback on the progress of the lessons.
