Further Education Special Needs Volunteer Programme
UK Projects Mobile Teacher Programme Border Camp Education Programme

Mobile Teacher Programme

Owing to fighting, political repression and economic hardship over quarter of a million Burmese have fled to Thailand to seek work. Another 130,000 are in refugee camps.

The 'migrant' population provides a low skilled, low paid workforce for the factories and farms along the Thai/Burma border. In response to this influx of migrants, small schools have been set up providing some level of education. English is part of the curriculum although few teachers have any formal qualification.

In 2008 BEP began a phased programme of support for English language teaching in these migrant schools.

Phase 1 was completed in December 2008. During Phase 1, supplementary materials were developed based on communicative techniques which extended the existing materials and added to teacher skills.

In Phase 2 in 2009 the Mobile Unit worked with Burmese teachers to upgrade their levels of English. This work has informed our planning for Phase 3 when, in 2010, the emphasis will be on the development of classroom practice. This is very much a 'grass roots' programme with teachers working alongside their Burmese counterparts and providing close support for a group of schools.

BEP is now looking to appoint members of a Mobile Unit for Phase 3
