In 1997, the SLORC was dissolved and replaced by the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) which is still in power. It has moved away from the old Burmese Way to Socialism and now encourages development through a capitalist model. However, the military stay firmly in control with their main support coming from China. In 2007 protests led by the Buddhist Sangha brought much international attention to Burma but failed to oust the military. These protests were suppressed with considerable brutality which earned the regime a great deal of criticism from the international community. The political and economic situation in Burma has led to a massive refugee problem. More than 800,000 refugees have been driven into neighbouring Thailand, Bangladesh and India [Burma Watch International] and estimates suggest that over half a million are internally displaced inside Karen State. Over quarter of a million 'migrants' have crossed the border into Thailand to seek work. The UN continues to seek a way forward by trying to bring about talks between the SPDC, NLD and Ethnic Groups.
