The BURMA EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP

The Burma Education Partnership [BEP] developed from the Karen Education Partnership was which was set up in 2002 and worked with the displaced Karen people of Burma. The Karen people were staunch allies of the British during World War Two. They are now suffering from the effects of many years of oppression and brutality.

The needs of other ethnic Burmese groups such as the Karenni, Kachin, Shan, Mon and Burman were later identified. The name ‘Burma Education Partnership’ was subsequently adopted, as it is now more representative of our work.

BEP is an educational charity run by a board of eight directors supported by specialist co-opted advisors. It specialises in the provision of professional educational support for a range of projects on the Thai Burma border. It draws on a network of educationalists and business managers working in all sectors of education and has strong links with educational organisations operating in the UK and Thailand.

Currently all of the work of BEP is carried out in Britain and Thailand by unpaid volunteers. Although it is a small organisation BEP takes pride in its highly professional approach. BEP has now placed over forty volunteers on the Thai/Burma border. All volunteer teachers are fully qualified, are subject to police checks and must undergo an induction covering, Burmese/Karen culture and language, working with displaced and vulnerable people and issues of health and safety. All volunteers are required to follow a strict code of conduct and sign an agreement to follow this code.

BEP is insured for public liability, employers liability and professional indemnity. It also provides a comprehensive travel insurance for all volunteers.

The BEP is a registered charitable company limited by guarantee [Registered Charity No.1115837 Company number 5664251]. It developed from the Karen Education Partnership [KEP: registered charity no: 1092630].
